What is Vaginal Atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy, also known as atrophic vaginitis, is the thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to a decrease in oestrogen levels. It commonly occurs after menopause but can also affect women during breastfeeding or those taking certain medications.
What are the Symptoms?
- Dryness: Feeling of dryness in the vaginal area.
- Burning Sensation: Discomfort or burning in the vagina.
- Itching: Persistent itching around the vaginal area.
- Painful Intercourse: Discomfort or pain during sexual activity.
- Urinary Issues: Increased frequency or urgency to urinate, and a higher risk of urinary tract infections.
How to treat Vaginal Atrophy?
- Lifestyle Changes: Staying sexually active can improve vaginal health.
- Lubricants: Using water-based lubricants during intercourse to reduce discomfort.
- Moisturizers: Regular use of vaginal moisturizers to maintain moisture.
- Hormonal Treatments: Oestrogen therapy, either systemic or local (creams, tablets, rings), to alleviate symptoms.
- Non-Hormonal Treatments:
- Selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM) can help relieve symptoms without using oestrogen.
- Vaginal Laser Therapy: A non-invasive procedure that stimulates collagen production and improves vaginal health..
- Diet and Supplements: Foods rich in phytoestrogens (like soy products) and omega-3 fatty acids, may help improve symptoms.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Regular Kegel exercises can improve blood flow and muscle tone in the vaginal area.
